ABC’s June “First Tuesday Bookclub”

I have just got a chance to watch last night’s First Tuesday Bookclub. It was an interesting discussion this month. Both books discussed were Australian.

All the panelists loved Breath by Tim Winton. I must admit that I have never been huge fan of him, but the way they spoke about his writing was captivating. It is interesting that Librarything reviewers are not so happy with it. Just another book I have to get around to reading, so I can make up my own mind.

They also discussed Demons at Dusk, which is a fictionalized account of the Myall Creek Massacre. When the book was introduced I thought it was going to be another “must-read.” It was endorsed by prolific biographer Peter FitzSimons as a book “all Australians must read.” Nobody else on the panel agreed with him, though, and some were very scathing about the writing.

The show can be vodcasted through itunes, or streamed here.

Does anyone else think this show is turning a bit “writing-snobbish”? It seems that no one seems to simply enjoy books anymore. Although, tonight they all raved about Breath, so I have no evidence for that statement, really.

Happy Easter!

I am taking a break over Easter, so I will not be posting over the next couple of days. I have packed up my current obligation reads (bookrings - Brighton Rock and The Inheritance of Loss) and a couple of free choices and we are off. I am always wildly optimistic when I go on holiday, as I forget that I still need to look after my two preschoolers, so I get no more reading time than I would otherwise. But worse than schlepping too many books is to get there and have nothing to read!

Anyway, Happy Easter. I hope you have a good time on your break, if you are having one. What are you reading over Easter?
